Q: What is the Classical Education Approach?

A: The Classical Approach believes for education to be effective, it must

  • Go beyond a simple outlining of facts
  • Cultivate thinking and the ability to articulate facts
  • Develop critical thinking skills into arguments
  • Convey logic and reasoning into clear and persuasive speech
  • Strengthen order, focus, and structure in thinking
  • Teach students how to learn
  • Expand independent learning skills
  • Invigorate critical thinking, logical analysis, and a yearning to learn
Q: My child is already critical and likes to argue. How could this approach help?

A: Being argumentative and using critical thinking skills to develop a logical argument are closely related. Both involve the desire to be persuasive. Classical Education involves character and moral education as the essence of learning. It infuses reason with a strong moral foundation to regulate the conscience. Excellent thinkers understand how to properly defend and express good thinking.

Q: I’ve heard of Classical Rhetoric, but what does it mean?

A: Martin Cothran says, “The classical ideal of a great person was a good man speaking well. This meant that, in his education, a great man must not only study the rules and principles of eloquent expression, but he must know and do the good; he must not only have mastered certain techniques, he needed to be familiar with the Good, the True, and the Beautiful. The discipline that taught a man these things was called classical rhetoric.”

Q: Classical education sounds advanced. What if learning is difficult for my child?

A: Classical education can be used for all types of learners, and makes learning fun!

Q: How do I know if my child will “like” Classical Education if school is already hard?

A: Our typical guest struggles with their thinking and logic. Individuals that learn how to think well, and to express themselves well, develop confidence in their ability to think and communicate. Providing healthy outlets for confident expression and articulation increases self-respect, and a respect for opinions and thoughts of others.
